Congratulations Sohan Basak: 🎉 A (Really) Groundbreaking Step Forward for AI Research in India!

First of all, we wish all of you a Happy Holi! Here are some greetings from our Chairperson, Abhivardhan.

Second of all, let’s get to the main topic.

The Indian Society of Artificial Intelligence and Law is delighted to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Sohan Basak and Paras Chopra on the launch of the IndiaML tracker—an open-source initiative designed to track and showcase research papers authored by Indian researchers and accepted at prestigious AI/ML conferences, including ICML 2024 and NeurIPS 2024. 🌟

This transformative project, accessible at indiaml.lossfunk.com, not only highlights the exceptional contributions of Indian talent in the global AI ecosystem but also addresses a critical gap. As recent data shared via the IndiaML platform indicates, India’s contribution to top AI conference papers remains notably low, ranging between 0.1–1%—a statistic that underscores the urgency of initiatives like this to elevate our research visibility and impact on the world stage.

Why does this matter? 🚀

Fostering visibility, collaboration, and innovation in AI research is essential for India’s growth as a global leader in technology.

The IndiaML tracker, built on open-source principles and powered by contributions from the community (available for collaboration at https://github.com/lossfunk/indiaml-tracker/), serves as a beacon for researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders alike.

It aligns perfectly with our mission at the Indian Society of Artificial Intelligence and Law to promote responsible AI development, standardization, and ethical governance in India, as outlined on our platform at https://aistandard.io.

We are particularly inspired by the use of LLMs to identify affiliations and the call for community pull requests, demonstrating a scalable, inclusive approach to advancing AI research.

This initiative not only celebrates Indian excellence but also paves the way for enhanced policy frameworks, academic-industry partnerships, and international collaboration—key pillars for India’s ascent in the AI landscape.

Kudos to Sohan, Paras, and the entire team for this visionary effort. Let’s rally behind IndiaML to take India to unprecedented heights in AI research and innovation! 🇮🇳

The Indian Society of Artificial Intelligence and Law (ISAIL.IN) is an artificial intelligence industry forum, founded by Abhivardhan in 2018. Our mission as an independent, not-for-profit industry forum for the analytics & AI industry in India is to promote responsible development of artificial intelligence and its standardisation in India.

Enforcing AI standards in the Indian and Indo-Pacific markets is hard. And yet, ISAIL.IN intends to document data and inputs associated with the market tendencies around three facets of artificial intelligence: its adoption, research around it, and its real-life policy implications across as many sectors as possible.

This is why, the AiStandard.io Alliance, administered by ISAIL.IN, intends to establish an allies of AI entities in India, Asia and the Global South, to develop market-friendly AI standards, with sector-specific, and sector-neutral contexts.
