Position Statement on Google's plan to remove control of EU Data Regulators over data of UK users

Updated: Apr 3, 2020

Submitted by Adetola Jesulayomi, Research Intern on Google's plan to end control of the data protection framework of the EU over the UK post-Brexit.

  • We support the idea behind Google's plan to move its British users' accounts out of the control of European Union privacy regulators, placing them under U.S. jurisdiction instead as we believe it would be within an easier reach of British law enforcement;

  • Just as Lea Kissner, Google's former lead for global privacy technology, had commented on the privacy implications in a post-Brexit scenario, she would certainly have been surprised if the company had kept British accounts controlled in an EU country with the United Kingdom no longer a member. We believe that this is actually the best approach as prompted by the UK's exit from the EU;
